St. Stephen’s Parish Church in Lindley was consecrated on 1st September 1830 by the Archbishop of York, commissioned as part of Parliament’s wish ‘to Build Additional Churches’ to meet the needs of local parishioners - previously there had only been the one parish church in Huddersfield. Built for the princely sum of £2,704 14s. 11d., St. Stephen’s then as now has always been at the centre of life in Lindley, playing a leading role in educating local children and supporting the many social and cultural groups which flourish in the parish.

Music has always had a central role at St. Stephen’s. The church organ rebuilt in 1912 and peal of 8 bells dedicated in September 1874, (both provided as a result of generous donations), have given much joy to many generations of parishioners. The real joy of course coming from the unbroken line of dedicated local people who have given their time and skills as organists, choristers and bell-ringers. |

Described in the 1830’s as ‘ a neat edifice of pointed architecture consisting of a nave and chancel with an embattled tower at the west end’, the church itself has undergone a number of changes in its 175 years, not least with the installation of its many stained glass windows, beginning in 1872 with the beautiful East Window. More recently, keeping up with the needs of modern life and the increasing numbers of parishioners, internal changes were carried out to allow for Community Rooms and Junior Church to be housed within the fabric of the church itself. All in all, a lovely Parish Church, much loved by all who worship there, with a special warmth and welcome for everyone who comes to visit. |

Local records show that the first Church Day School was opened in 1831 and close links with the Mother’s Union, Brownies and Guides and the local Operatic Society have been a feature of how parish and church life have grown together over the years. |
